I have moved my blog to a different network, because most of my friends are in that one, and also, it’s easier to use. Sorry, wordpress, you were good to me, but I have to do what’s best for me and my friendships. *tear*

FINALS!!!

Wow, this semester is almost over. Really, I go home friday.
I have one more final in Art History, it will probably be brutal, but I’ll just be ready for that.

All the senior shows are over, it was such a great, crazy, insane experience. I handed in my reflection paper for it to get my credit, and it was 10.5 pages long. I’m long winded, what can I say! REally, though, it was so interesting how there was so much variety between the style of plays and the style of directing between all of them. I got more experience than just three plays, I got three different directors and syles and cost ranges, as well. It was really good for me. and I’m starting to capture a little bit of minimalism, which is a difficult thing for me to find. It has been evasive, but I am beginning to understand it better.

I will be home this summer, starting this Friday. I will be working with Theatre Cedar Rapids two days a week, and doing some restaurant work some other days, hopefully. I will also be GOING TO SPAIN for four weeks! I’m excited. I think I might forget how to speak English, but it’s okay. (Mom has always wanted to learn Spanish, si?)

Right now, I am sitting at my desk doing homework in a very not rushed way. Please clap a little for me. AND YESTERDAY I WATCHED A MOVIE ALL BY MYSELF AND I WAS NOT EVEN NOT DOING HOMEWORK THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING!! I think that perhaps did not make sense. I didn’t have any homework that I should have been doing. There.

Anyway, today I get to see Joseph about 5 times. If you don’t know, that is a BIG DEAL. We went running after chapel today, it was great fun, and then we’re doing the 24/7 prayer thing, and we’ll be going to Nini’s show, and then we’re going to hang out at the Bean. It’s a good day. And it’s only 2:00! Oh, and I made enough food for lunch to last for about 8 days. yeah. super exciting.

That’s my day. I am doing well, still looking for a job for the summer, trying to stay ahead of the senior shows, and homework.

NEW POST!!

SO I got this new thingy on my computer, and I can post without actually fenaggling through the internet…it’s pretty snazzy. Yeah to MAC, eh? Well, my life is realy busy, but it’s good. Nini’s show is opening tomorrow and almost all the painting is done, thank GOODNESS!! And after that Melissa’s show opens in a week, but that’s not as big of a workload, which is great. Joseph and I went to the fabric store in Hawarden last Saturday, and it was pretty fun, not gonna lie. especially since it wasn’t my money!

I get back home on May 9, for any of y’all who were wondering. And this summer, I’m going to SPAIN for 4 weeks! that’s mid-june to mid-july. And the rest of the time I’m working with theatre cedar rapids on Tues/Thurs and hoping to get a job for the rest of the time. Applications are on my desk…needing stamps and envelopes.

See ya! Maybe I’ll get decent at this.

Ummmm…Sorry?

Wow, so I almost forgot about this place! Sorry to any of you who might have been trying to keep up with my life and I didn’t write for years and years (in cyberspace time). Right now, I should be doing Spanish homework, and I’m getting ready to go to Intro. to Counseling class, and then I get to work! And that might involve painting…more. Oh, those of you who don’t know, I was the primary scenic painter for the current mainstage show, “The Winter’s Tale” so I didn’t ever change out of my paint clothes. At least it seemed that way!

I’m also on makeup crew for this show, and it’s great. And I’m going home in two weeks for Alburnett’s musical and I’m going to help with makeup there, too! That will be a leap back in time, eh? Ahhhh, Alburnett. So…That’s my exciting news. I am working in the scene shop, building and painting stuff for shows. I am in the Directing class, and we have auditions on Monday for our one-act plays that we each get to direct. I am directing one called “Gladiator,” by Richard Caliban, and it’s a really heavy and amazing piece about the defenses we hide behind because we are afraid of being vulnerable. I am really excited. It will be a challenge for this campus, as well as a challenge to direct.

So that is the quick rundown of my life. Again, I’m sorry if I left people hanging for awhile. by now y’all probably don’t even try to check this because it’s been out of commission for so long!

THE SHOW!!

I’m at dordt, and I’ve been here for a week now. It’s been good. Classes start wed. and the reason I’m here so early is because i’m working with Joelle, Jonathon, Amy, and Chris on THE SHOW for the freshmen. yup, it’s been fun and the performance is tonight! Yippee!! I’m about to feel really conspicuous…oh well.

i’m all moved in, I do have to get some of my stuff where it needs to be, though, because our fifth roommate is coming in about an hour–this place should be ready for her, eh? I like my apartment, and my roommates are grand. It should be a good year. I’ve decided that last year was a really tough year, alot of stress and whatnot, and I want this year to be really fun. I realize that everyone wants that, right? But I think I’m going to just let go of some things…I’m trying to simplify my life right now, which means i’m deciding about the play and also I have the opportunity to try out for Kantorei this semester, too. We’ll see how that all ends up. I can’t do it all, and I have to just be okay with that.

Here goes life.

Awake from a Dream

I am back in Iowa, I got in Monday night. And it was great. My parents were there to greet me, along with unexpected guests! Kelsey, Leanna, and RANDOM GIRL (okay, really it was Katie (I think that’s her name, I’m really bad with names) who was in town with Kels…but she was standing there like I knew her and I was really feeling awkward and thinking “do I know her? am I supposed to know her? she’s looking at me like I should know her…” it was fun). and JOSEPH WAS THERE, TOO! Okay, so I’m not going to lie, I’m not good at being surprised and saying something acceptable as a greeting. all I said was “What are YOU doing here???!!!” (Interpretation: Oh my goodness, it’s so good to see you! …read through the lines…). So anyway, that night we got Coldstone and went to my house and Kels asked me “what were the three highlights from the summer?” and I had no idea what to say. I’m still trying to process. So anyway, that was my first night home. Joseph stayed until yesterday (tuesday) afternoon, and today IT’S STORMING OUTSIDE!!! I HAVEN’T SEEN THIS MUCH RAIN IN SO LONG!!! I’m so excited.

So anyway, to the applicability of the title.

I’m back in Iowa and everything is exactly how it’s always been. My parents still watch the news at 10 and then go to bed. I still have a dentist appointment and a haircut scheduled. i need to go to wal-mart and get stuff ready for school. I need to pack. I play around on my computer during the day because there’s not much else to do. And the only reminders of this summer are my memories, the things I brought back with me, and pictures on my computer. I feel like I could cut out my time in LA, and attach my last time in Iowa to my time in Iowa now, and the two pieces would fit together perfectly and LA would be just something I did once. It’s an eerie thing; everything else is the same as it always has been, yet I have all these thoughts running through my head, like “Do I have my keys so I don’t get locked outside when I walk Joseph to the car?” But I don’t need those keys anymore. I don’t have to close the gate at night. I don’t need to set up breakfast. I just need to get up, and go about my business, just like everyone else. But it seems so strange. I guess I’ll get used to it…I am in the midst of figuring out what to do with it, and how to answer questions like “what were your three highlights of the summer?” I’ll get there, just watch me.

These are my mellow thoughts of the day. But the good part of the day: I’m getting my hair cut!

Anaheim, CA!

Wow, so this week has gone so quick…but really it’s only Thursday, so it was a short week. I had a group from Anaheim (And proud to be part of the OC! not the tv show…) here from sunday night through wed. afternoon, so a short week, but it was insanely packed with alot of things. I’m not going to lie, I was really short on patience this week, so it was hard to have a group. And I will admit that they did not get all of me, as they deserved to. I was lost when it came to sufficient energy. I wish they had come earlier in the summer and I would have had more to give. But alas, they were my last group, and in brutal honesty, God could have given me sufficient patience, but I wasn’t looking hard enough. It was my bad and my mistake which I will learn from and go on with life.

So this is the last post that I will have which involves describing a group…they’re all gone. I loved this summer and I loved my job, but I really need to get to the homeland. I can feel the drag, and I just need to get away. I have learned to love LA, though, and although I don’t think I could live here, i have developed a passion for the people and needs here, as I think you would anywhere you do ministry. So those are my thoughts.

I fly home on Monday and I’m super excited!! MOM AND DAD, HERE I COME!! (And Ed, WATCH OUT!!) ooh, p.s., Ed, are we going boating? please? just once? I hope so….You’re my favorite brother…!

Today I went downtown. Tracee dropped me off after we went to pinkberry (frozen yogurt…amazing!) and I went down Santee Alley, which is an alley (surprise surprise!) with tons of shops all along it. then I went to a shop that has some cheap clothes, but I didn’t get anything, and then I went into a mall and got some ice cream and sat for awhile. It was great. then I went and caught the bus and rode it home! And here I am. And I’m about to watch a movie, y’all! (I’ve picked up southern slang and LA attitude this summer, watch out!)

Janelle told me she’s going to have to kick my butt before I go back to Iowa because I have too much attitude. we’ll see.

Ahhhh, Sunnyvale, CA

So our sunnyvale group left this morning, they were a big ol’ group of over 70, so it was a little crazy. But the week went well, so yay to that! This morning all the rest of the hosts and I went to help out at a kids’ site because we didn’t have a volunteer group to send, and we basically just sat there and watched Pirates of the Carribean. not too hard of a day! But we did have to ride the bus so it took a really long time to get there and back. so we got back here at 3:30 and now I’m messing around on the computer. WE’re all going out to eat tonight and tomorrow my group from OC from last week is picking me up and I’m hangin’ with them all tomorrow, free of responsibility! YAAAAYYYY!!! I’m really really excited! So anyway, that’s my story. And I go home in a week and a half!!! I’m really really excited!

Church of Scientology

Yesterday, Courtney and I paid a little visit to the church of scientology up in hollywood. It was a good experience, and it cleared up alot of random things that I’ve heard floating around. I now know that yes, Tom Cruise is is a very good scientologist, and no, scientology does not have anything to do with science fiction or aliens. okay, now that that’s cleared up, I do know that I will not become a scientologist, there are just too many things that I do disagree with. However, having said this, I also think that they do have some good things going. For instance, while the Christian church would take a person who has a failing marriage because of a lack of communication and tell them to “trust God” and “we’ll pray for you”, the church of scientology offers classes to realistically address the root problems, like a communication class. So while I don’t agree with how they base their religion or that they have no specific head deity, they do have very realistic ways to help people. I think this is somehting that the Christian church can learn from them, though still keeping Christ the main focus is a necessity. Also, Jesus came to this earth to heal the sick, not heal the people who were completely healthy. Scientology is more of a religion of the healthy. they want to take able, competent adults, and make them more confident and competent in all aspects of their life. Being around so many issues all summer, though, makes me have to hope that there is a way out for those that scientology would view as hopeless. The man on the street who’s caught up in a cycle of drugs has just as much hope in Christ as the movie star at the Park Plaza Hotel, if not more because those at the bottom can see the need to climb up more than those who think that they are already at the top. God will work in whoever he wants, regardless of their circumstances and their past. Whereas the Church of Scientology will not take anyone who has a bad past to work as one of their overseers or “auditors”, Christ disregards a person’s past and takes chances on people who are going to disappoint him and allows them to lead, as well as they can, his sheep toward him. Does he ask for a person with a perfect past? No, he does not. Does he know that we are bound to fail? yes, he does, but he chooses to love us poor, helpless beings anyway. That is my thought for today.
